Participatory Book Design

“You were not supposed to see these images. No one was,” says Christoph Bangert in the intro to his new book ‘WAR PORN’ which is basically a catalogue of battered, bloodied, mutilated and/or dismembered corpses from conflict zones around the world that Bangert has photographed during his career. It’s graphic. What I make of the images and project, I am still processing but I will mention a design feature that works. The perforations that join pages in a typical concertina binding haven’t been undone after printing. This means if you want to see an image you have to separate the pages. You become active in the decision to view or not…which carries a lot of weight when confronted by ethically difficult images.” – Pete Brook
